Compressor Short-Cycling & Overload Failures

The compressor is the crucial part of any cooling system. It pumps refrigerant through the unit and keeps the air cold. In Sydney’s hot summer, extreme heat outside can push the compressor beyond its normal limits. This causes short-cycling, where the compressor turns on and off too quickly, wasting energy. A semi-hermetic compressor, a sealed unit built for heavy commercial use, can wear out fast under this kind of stress. A scroll compressor works in a similar way. It uses two curved metal parts. Evaporator Icing & Hot Gas Defrost Valve Failure

A hot gas defrost valve melts this ice at set times through the day. If this valve fails, ice builds on the coil and blocks the airflow. This leads to a wrong superheat reading. Superheat is a temperature check that technicians use to confirm the system works at the right level.

A blocked filter drier is often the real cause behind this fault. This part removes moisture and dirt from the refrigerant line. When the drier gets clogged, it starves the valve of proper flow. Digital Controller (Carel/Dixell) Faults

Modern cold rooms and rack systems use digital controllers, most often from brands like Carel or Dixell, to manage temperature and defrost cycles. These controllers read data from sensors that are placed around the system. Sensor drift is a common fault we see. Here, a sensor slowly gives a wrong reading over time, and the controller reacts to false data. A failed control output can stop a fan or valve from turning on at the right time. Wrong parameter settings can also throw off the whole system. This problem shows up often in busy supermarkets that use parallel rack systems, several units linked together to share one cooling load. Condenser Coil Fouling & Coastal Corrosion
